Happy February!  While this month often brings to mind love and romance, it has an additional significance for me, as executive director of Break the Cycle, a leading dating abuse prevention agency.  I recognize February as National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month.

Did you know, one in three teens will experience abuse in a dating relationship and more than two-thirds of them will never report it to anyone?

It doesn’t have to be that way.

We can all model loving, respectful and healthy relationships for the young people in our lives. And more importantly, we can all offer help to those – especially youth -- who may be in unhealthy or abusive relationships.

Thanks to our partnership with the National Dating Abuse Helpline, young people can now learn dating basics, find communication tips, take quizzes to assess their relationships and get the help they need all in one place—loveisrespect.org. It’s a cooler, smarter, better website where teens can chat, call (866-331-9474 or TTY 866-331-8453) or for the first time ever, TEXT with a peer advocate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. How cool is that?

We are so proud to have launched the first national texting service addressing dating abuse. With Verizon’s support, we will conduct an independent, third-party evaluation on the impact of this valuable new resource. This research will help us continue to improve the help services and the extensive library of relationship tips and tools at loveisrespect.org.

You can help us spread the word! If you know a teen or twenty-something, tell them about loveisrespect.org.LoveIsRespect.png
